Hang Ten

There is a little part in an episode of 'Spongebob' that always bugs me just a bit. Sandy is surfing on 'goo lagoon' and is doing a handstand on her surf board. The announcer says "there goes Sandy hanging ten, fingers that is." It's not that squirrels don't really have fingers that bothers me - it's that, to me, her toes are what are hanging - cause they are up in the air. But then I never really understood what hanging ten meant - I guess I assumed that it was the fingers that were hanging since the feet were on the board. I saw this episode of 'Spongebob' last night and came to the conclusion that I do not understand the term at all. Today, the exterminator came, totally unrelated? No, turns out it's not. I turned on the girls' cartoons so they would stay out of his way and wouldn't stand there and ask him a bazillion questions. Having nothing else to do while he worked, I sat down and held A. and watched too. Yo Gabba Gabba was on (this show is torture similar to that of Teletubbies - and this one has annoying songs that get stuck in your head) and randomly up pops an interlude starring a surfer dude. The children's voices that narrate go on to count surfer dude's toes as he stands on the front of the surf board - ta da 'hanging ten!' Then he goes into the water to actually surf and, while surfing, walks to the front of his board and sticks his toes off the end! Now I get it!!! It is the toes that are hanging - but they are hanging off the board into the water!! not into the air!! So I learned something today - it was very weird that I was wondering about hanging ten last night and then had my questions answered today by Yo Gabba Gabba....unexpected learning opportunities abound!!! Woo.

*side note: Sandy Cheeks' fingers were NOT hanging ten because they were definitely in the center of her surf board - not hanging off of the front :-)
