Top Chef...

...is gone. What I knew was probably just a free trial of bravo - although I kept hoping, unreasonably, that it was an oversight by dish network - is over. It went away on Wednesday morning. Wednesdays are the nights new episodes air. So sad. And they won't let me have bravo unless we upgrade our package - I just can't justify paying an extra 15-20 dollars a month for one channel. If we upgrade, we would also lose the Outdoor channel, which the husband loves, so it would be my gain, his loss, and money not very well spent.

Maybe next season I can just go to the local movie place that shows Top Chef and Project Runway for free. Yes, that's a good plan. Mom's night out. Next season - when the baby can be left for more than 30 minutes without freaking out. (Last night I left the girls with Daddy for what should have been about 2 hours. I got called home after being away for 45 minutes - Baby was VERY unhappy to wake up and find mama gone. It is sort of nice to be needed, though)

Memory

The girls started playing this game correctly (instead of just looking at the cards) a few months ago. As we were playing today, I noticed that B. would turn over the same card each turn - even though she knew where to find a matching pair. She would turn over that same card each turn like she couldn't really control herself and then try to turn over two more cards - the ones that matched. I'm guessing it's an impulse control thing - she automatically grabs the card that is close to her, almost out of habit, even while she's thinking about the ones she really wants. I remember that A. was having trouble with that the first few times we played. I was frustrated for her because she turned the same card over at least 6 turns in a row. I tried making her stop and think about what was under that card and if she really wanted it before each turn. This time she got all the matches. It's weird though because last time B. was doing much better at remember the matches and was not having the impulse problem - so I'm not sure why she regressed back to a habit she hadn't had.

Just a small thing I found interesting (and a bit frustrating! I don't know how many times B. turned over the dog today!).

Baby news: She got her Johnny Jump the other day - but we don't have trim on the doorway we want to use. Husband is planning to rig something up so it will work in a more central location. We did try it in the entry to the girls' room - she thought it was exciting for a few minutes but then got a little tired of all the sisters-in-my-face.
I have also been catching the first signs of consonants in her babble - pretty sure I heard 'd' and maybe 'b' and 'm'.
We had our 4-month doctor appointment with shots last Thursday. The doctor said she looked skinny for a breast fed baby - grrrr- I think she's the same amount of chunky that the girls were. I'm continuing in my quest to find a different pediatrician. The girls are up for recertification on their insurance so it's yet another opportunity for me to find a new doctor. Reasons I don't like this doctor: extremely long office waits, unsanitary practices - a towel on the baby scale that may or may not be changed after each patient (but it's mostly likely that it's not) AND when they give shots they just stab the used shot into the examination table to hold it in place while they administer the next shot...ew, ew..ew. -the doctor tries to give us medication when we are only there for a check up (I'm very anti-overmedicating), and, most recently, he didn't do any checking on the baby AT ALL for her 4-month check - didn't even know how many shots she had been given - didn't look in her ears, rotate her legs, push on her tummy - nothing! He held her for about 2 seconds and handed her back - boo.

Well I must be spending too much time on the computer again today - just caught the girls making a "cocktail" in the toilet - toothpaste, shampoo, and hand soap...*sigh*

Strange ties

It seems like life always has little themes - almost like an episode of 'Seinfeld'. First with the hang ten thing. Then last night I saw and episode of 'Will and Grace' that mentioned espadrilles (what exactly are they?? - some sort of shoe, I know...) and then directly after that at the beginning of 'Fresh Prince' he mentions espadrilles while reading off of his Spanish test - so espadrilles in Spanish. So weird! Maybe some exec. at the CW was looking for ties between shows - but they were such teeny tiny mentions that I really can't imagine that. Another one: this morning I notice that a friend of mine posted on facebook that she's reading a book called 'Motherless Brooklyn' and just two days ago the husbands first cousin's wife had a new baby and named her Brooklyn. I haven't heard that name in a really long time and then it pops up twice.

So maybe these things aren't that strange popping up together - just seems like it happens over and over. I can't remember specific examples, but I know in the past little things have popped up more than twice - there have been times where they pop up 3 or more times.

***Purpose of this post***to have proof for future reference that this happens a lot to me!

Hang Ten

There is a little part in an episode of 'Spongebob' that always bugs me just a bit. Sandy is surfing on 'goo lagoon' and is doing a handstand on her surf board. The announcer says "there goes Sandy hanging ten, fingers that is." It's not that squirrels don't really have fingers that bothers me - it's that, to me, her toes are what are hanging - cause they are up in the air. But then I never really understood what hanging ten meant - I guess I assumed that it was the fingers that were hanging since the feet were on the board. I saw this episode of 'Spongebob' last night and came to the conclusion that I do not understand the term at all. Today, the exterminator came, totally unrelated? No, turns out it's not. I turned on the girls' cartoons so they would stay out of his way and wouldn't stand there and ask him a bazillion questions. Having nothing else to do while he worked, I sat down and held A. and watched too. Yo Gabba Gabba was on (this show is torture similar to that of Teletubbies - and this one has annoying songs that get stuck in your head) and randomly up pops an interlude starring a surfer dude. The children's voices that narrate go on to count surfer dude's toes as he stands on the front of the surf board - ta da 'hanging ten!' Then he goes into the water to actually surf and, while surfing, walks to the front of his board and sticks his toes off the end! Now I get it!!! It is the toes that are hanging - but they are hanging off the board into the water!! not into the air!! So I learned something today - it was very weird that I was wondering about hanging ten last night and then had my questions answered today by Yo Gabba Gabba....unexpected learning opportunities abound!!! Woo.

*side note: Sandy Cheeks' fingers were NOT hanging ten because they were definitely in the center of her surf board - not hanging off of the front :-)
Yes, I do watch too much 'Spongebob'

Melancholy

It strikes me that I might come across a bit negative - both in person and in this blog. I discovered something recently, though, that sheds a little light on why that may be. According to the "Personality Plus" lady, Florence Littauer, I'm have a melancholy personality. Now I'm not going to say that this woman is right about everything personality - related (for instance she says we are born with our personality and I have it on the expert authority of my mother, who also majored in psychology, that I was a sanguine child), but she seems to be very accurate on a lot of different specifics. I feel like I understand people's actions in general much better after reading the "Personality Plus for Parents" book. I still am not totally sure which categories my children fall into - mostly because the twins seem to swap personality traits every few weeks.

But now I understand that I'm not being negative, really, I'm just striving for perfection in everything. Some people would come to my house and say "she can't possibly be a perfectionist" because my house, while mostly clean and tidy, falls very short of being perfectly in order. However, my idea of a perfect home is not a sterile, decorator environment. I want a clean home, but also a comfortable one. I only get cranky when we go out of the house and leave it in a state of disarray or when I have to wake up to a mess - not when the house gets untidy through the day. So, perfection has different meanings for different perfectionists.
I first noticed this perfectionist tendency in college when I would get very, very disallusioned when I discovered the human side of any professor or even student leader. I asked myself, "why am I so shocked to find out that all people make mistakes??" I guess each time I had thought I had found the 'perfect' person and had placed them up on my little pedistal: "the perfect German professor," "the perfect band director"," the perfect section leader", etc. Even today, when I have firmly impressed on my mind that all people will slip up every once in awhile, I still catch myself feeling sad when people I love and respect make even little mistakes.

And, of course, I'm hardest on myself. That's probably why I find parenting to be SO hard. I just can't be perfect at it. The more I fail, the more frustrated I get - and when I get frustrated I do an even worse job. Some days I do better - but I never have a perfect day. Three year olds never, ever let up, and they sense all moments of weakness. 'Mom is on the phone, let's climb into our doll house or pull it down and stand on it....etc'. I feel like such a horrible fake when I look down and smile at my happy baby just seconds after I have hollered at and/or spanked and/or put in the corner one of the twins. But I digress into the black hole of struggles with three year olds.

The 'Personality' lady says that melancholies need to work on not expecting perfection from everyone/thing. So far I feel like I've been doing a lot better at thinking people are great dispite their imperfections - even loving them because of them - or especially because they can admit them. My mom trained me to look for the good in all situations and people and I think that helps. But I just cannot figure out how to give myself a break. I know that I would be a better parent if I could cut myself a little slack - not because I need to care less about how my children are raised - but because I can't perform well under this amount of pressure.

One of the sermons series we had at church a while back was on parenting/discipline (that's where I got the Personality Plus book in the first place). I only heard bits and pieces because I was out with the baby, but one thing that I heard really stuck with me. They said we can't and aren't supposed to raise perfect kids. We don't have to raise kids that will be successful etc - our ONLY responsibility is to lead our children always toward Christ. Teaching them what they need to know so when the time comes they will hopefully make the choice to follow Him, to dedicate their lives to Him and His purpose. That is such a huge responsibility!! Yet it also takes a lot of weight of my shoulders - my kids don't have to be perfectly behaved in the library. If they are the ones having breakdowns at all the birthday parties, it's ok. I just need to calm them and love them - not freak out that everyone thinks I have raised hysterical children. And I keep reminding myself over, and over, and over, and over that God gave me these children because he thought I was the right mom for them and as long as I am following Him - I will be able to do a 'perfect' job at raising them.

This, I cannot tolerate.

I can not live with these in my house. Here's the description:
American Roaches are larger reddish-brown cockroaches which usually forage outside. They average around an inch and a half in length and some species have wings. They can feed on grains, sweets, and some plants. They can be found in crawl spaces and woodpiles around the house. Occasionally they enter randomly inside homes because of temperature changes and various other reasons. Other names are water bugs and Palmetto bugs.
There was one crawling on my arm this morning, as I slept. I have abandoned my bedroom until further notice. I'm currently looking for a good exterminator. I hate having to spray, though. I don't like lots of chemicals in my house. But I just CAN NOT have these things on me. Nope. It's giving me nightmares. I was doing ok while they just came into the kitchen every so often. We sprayed all around the house outside and under the cabinets in the kitchen. Obviously not good enough. All those pushing for us to move to Kansas have definitely found an ally in these monsters.
